The description for the race said that the course was flat and fast. I am actually a runner who prefers hills and does much better on hilly courses. I guess the downhills help me pick up speed. Prior to this race I ran a 10K on the base so I knew that the conditions were gonna be brutal. Think hot, humid, hot, no shade, hot. Did I say hot?
Hickam holds a special place in my heart because I spent many a summer day and weekend playing in the canals fishing, crabbing, and swimming. We were always on the water catching halalu, crabbing blue pincher crab, and just having fun. The race took us to all of the beaches I played at as a child and a turn around at Mamala Bay golf course. Although it was hot, it was nice scenic run around the shore and I got to see just how modernized the base had become.
The run itself went pretty well. My last race was a disaster with gastro intestinal issues and while I really wanted to do better today I didn't want to put un-neede pressure on myself. While I have been training for distance I haven't done any speed work or strength work and the heat and humity have made my runs difficult. All of this along with a brutal work schedule (tons of training, tons of late nights) and the kids' active schedules (rushing all over the place every single afternoon) meant that I haven't been getting the rest or nutrition that I need.
Anyhow, I was able to keep a pretty good pace for the race. I started out at about a 9:40 pace but some aches and pains in the right knee made me back off a bit. I blame this for the fact that I chose to wear my old shoes instead of my new shoes since I didn't break them in enough. Toward the middle of the race the heat was too much and my pace slowed a bit but in the second half I tried to pick it up. Nothing like seeing a 9-10 year old little girl rocking the race to help you put it in gear.
My only goal was to finish the race strong and that I did. I took water at every other water station because I knew I was losing a lot of it in sweat and in the last three miles I gave it my all. I picked runner by runner and chased them down and passed them. In the last half mile I was able to pass all my targets and made it by the skin of my teeth at 2:09:59. Negative splits, not my fastest half and not my worst.
All in all a good race to train and see where I am at. I will work on improving what I need to as I begin my Fall Racing Schedule. :)
PS--Props to the hubby who had to take a detour to the bathroom but kept up with the pace even though he has not been training so much.
