Cross Fit Day 1

My Iolani Little Sister TM invited me to go to Cross Fit a million years ago. When she first mentioned it I was training for the North Shore Marathon and didn't want to risk injury so I told her I would go when racing season ended.  While I am able to run 26 miles physical pain from lifting heavy things scares the SHIT outta me.  I am not a lifter.  I am tiny and small and just not at all powerful (in my head).  It could be from my first experience in the weight room at Iolani when I couldn't even bench the 45 pound bar and saw BJ Itoman lifting a crapload of weights...anyway, the point is is that when it comes to weights I am a wuss.

However, with all the stuff I have been reading about fitness and with my recent slump in running, I knew it was time to mix it up and so I went with TM.  The class is at a person's house and there were about 8 women and 2 men and some cute kids running around.  Admittedly I was intimidated since I was so out of my element and yet at the same time I was comforted since I didn't know anyone except TM and I love that kid so it didn't matter so much.  When we got there, the leader of this little group went over today's WOD and went through each of them for me.

6 sets 45 seconds each:
Farmer's Walk (26 pound Kettle Bell) with 10 dips
Box Kickouts, Ball Raises
Front Leaning Rest Train
Russian Twists with 10 pound Medicine Ball

6 sets of 45 seconds didn't sound like much and so I was feeling a little better. When it was time to start TM and I decided to start with the Farmer's Walk. As I walked over to the Kettle Bells I had to laugh that the lightest one there was 26 pounds.  Hah.  I was contemplating buying a 10 pound one at Sport's Authority but didn't wanna pay the money and even that one felt heavy as heck!!

Farmer's Walk wasn't too bad and I realized it was the wrong one to start with right away.  I should have saved that for the middle of the workout to take a break :) because the rest of them burned.  :) Not so much that I wanted to cry, but so much that I realized that the 4 mile run I did earlier was probably a bad idea and that I probably wouldn't be able to run the 5 miles I have planned for tomorrow!

I did as best as I could with each exercise resting when I had to. I wasn't going to be a hero today, because I wanted to feel good enough to come back again and not be scared. :)

When we were done with the above I felt achy but really good.  And that's when the surprise came, 30 burpees in 3 minutes.  I hate burpees.  But I did them and was able to knock them all out in about 2:30 seconds.  :) Mission accomplished.  I was a little sore but not the worst I had ever felt after a workout.  Marathons were much more painful. I can do this. I got this!!!

And so I committed to Leg Day tomorrow.  Not really sure what to expect but was told we're doing air squats.  Now to decide whether I am going to run before class tomorrow. :)  hmm....
